TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police Force (Polri) has taken steps to strengthen its monitoring over internal human rights issues happening internally by collaborating with the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM).

The Polri Internal Affairs Division (Propam) Chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo met with the human rights watchdog to discuss this issue on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

"Under the order of the National Police Chief, we arrive here to meet with Komnas HAM [that acts] as the external monitoring body for human rights affairs," said the Propam Chief on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, as reported by Antaranews.

During the meeting, Sambo pledged the police institution's commitment to upholding human rights in enforcing the law, which aligns with the National Police Chief’s idea for a police force that is more responsible, transparent, and predictive.

Komnas HAM commissioner Mohammad Choirul Anam positively welcomed the positive gesture shown by the police institution and reinstates the belief that it is a key move to ensure the country's services will only improve in the future.

"In the Komnas HAM context, this is part of accountability for the police force," he said.

The National Police has been under public scrutiny following a series of cases involving police members that brings the question of professionalism. Some of the cases include the alleged sexual violation of a minor by a police member in East Luwu Regency, the recent viral video that showed a police member body-slamming a student protester in Tangerang, and the suspect-naming of a victim of assault in Medan.
