TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 54,000 people were evacuated as flood hits the northern and eastern part of China during the National Day holiday.

In addition, as many as 60 coal mine locations, 372 non-coal mining locations, 14 hazardous chemical factories, 1,035 construction projects, and 166 tourism sites in the Shanxi Province in northern China were also closed because of the flood.

Water inundated the upstream part of the Fenhe River in Shanxi, which is considered as the worst disaster in the last 40 years according to a Chinese media report on Saturday, October 8, 2021.

More than 100 units of heavy machinery and 500 people were mobilized to block the broken embankment of the river with 5,000-meter cubics of rocks, according to information from the Shanxi authorities.

Shanxi meteorology bureau estimated that the flood will hit China's eastern region because rain continues to pour since Friday, October 8, 2021, until Saturday, October 9, 2021. Local authorities are reported to have carried out various emergency actions within the last 24 hours.

The Chinese Water Resources Ministry has sent seven special task forces to Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong to carry out flood control measures.

Landslide that occurs following the heavy downpour since Thursday, October 7, 2021, has collapsed an office building in Shaanxi, killing three out of four people crushed by the building's rubbles.
