Police: Riot in Papua's Yahukimo Kills 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A riot broke out in Yahukimo of Papua on Sunday, October 3, killing six residents and leaving 41 others injured. The clashes between residents started at around 12:45 Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT).
“Of the six victims who were declared dead, one of them is the perpetrator. Meanwhile, 41 other victims are still receiving medical treatment at Yahukimo Hospital,” said the Papua Regional Police’s Head of Public Relations Senior Commissioner Ahmad Musthofa Kamal in a written statement on Monday, October 4.
The incident began when the Kimyal Tribe attacked the Yali Tribe. A number of houses and hotels were burned. The Kimyal people also carried traditional tools in the form of arrows and machetes, as well as other sharp tools during the riot.
Kamal stated that 52 suspected perpetrators had been arrested and were still being questioned by investigators. The trigger was allegedly related to the news received by the Kimyal Tribe community over the death of former Yahukimo Regent Abock Busup M.A.
After the riot, around 1,000 residents were taking refuge at the Yahukimo Police Headquarters. “The Indonesian Military (TNI) and police personnel carry out patrols both in the city center and on the outskirts of Dekai City to ensure the situation,” said Kamal.
