TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A powerful earthquake jolted regions of Central Sulawesi on Thursday, August 26. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the quake measuring 5.6 magnitudes originated from the sea, 44 kilometers northwest of Tojo Una-Una Regency.

The quake started at 9:14 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), producing strong tremors up to scale V of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) in Ampana, the capital city of Tojo Una-Una.

According to BMKG, the strong shaking can be felt by nearly everyone and awakens many people. At this scale, some dishes and windows are broken, unstable objects are overturned, poles and big items are seen swinging, and pendulum clocks may stop.

Strong tremors were also felt at MMI scale IV in Poso and at MMI scale III in Morowali.

Other regions also reported weaker shaking or earthquake intensity, namely East Luwu, Parigi Moutong, Palu, Toli-Toli, and Buol. BMKG explained via its official website that the quake came from a depth of 10 kilometers.
