TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some 1,100 pregnant women get their share of Covid-19 shots in the vaccination held at Yogyakarta's Gadjah Mada University (UGM) on Thursday, August 19.

The event was held at the university’s auditorium which has the capacity to accommodate the large number of participants and still abide by distancing health protocols.

“The decision to hold the vaccination here is due to the abundance of vaccinators and students who are willing to assist the inoculation,” said UGM rektor Panut Mulyono on Thursday.

Dean of UGM Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Ova Emilia, added that pregnant women are one of the most susceptible groups in the country to Covid-19 exposure, especially following the finding of the Delta variant from India.

The first vaccine dose is given during the second trimester of pregnancy (14-28 weeks) while the second dose will be given according to the interval and type of vaccine the recipient was given.

Emilia explained that this would help provide better immunity to be formed by the mother’s future babies and protect them from Covid-19 infections as “the fetus would benefit from adaptive immunity from the mother who has been vaccinated.”
