TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bekasi Regency in West Java, will soon build a central waste bank to mitigate the waste problem in the area. Head of the regency's Environment Department, Khaerul Hamid, said it was stipulated in West Java Governor Decree on the movement to sort wastes from the source.

"The target is to reduce waste volume until 30 percent and waste management to 70 percent in 2025," Khaerul said Saturday, August 7. The waste bank center will be built at Mekarmukti Recycling Center in Cikarang Utara to increase the utilization of household wastes with economic values in the society.

The Central West Bank will be the coordinator of smaller waste bank units to help market or promote wastes with economic values. "It will become the coordinator of around 160 waste bank units in Bekasi Regency."

The regency will also provide supporting facilities, so the finished products of the processed wastes can be sold.

Waste bank units can even send the materials or the finished products such as handcrafts, fertilizers, etc. to the central waste bank.

Besides developing the central waste bank, Bekasi Regency also pushes for the 3R campaign or reduce, reuse, and recycle, among the community as one of the efforts to preserve the environment.
