Walhi Against Jakarta's Plans to Build Waste Management in Tebet Park

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) Jakarta has opposed the Jakarta Provincial Government's plans to build a Waste Management Facility (FPSA) in Tebet Park, South Jakarta. The forum’s executive director, Tubagus Soleh Ahmadi, said the project would potentially boost the level of air pollution in public areas.
“We can imagine that areas that are usually used by people for recreational, sporting, and other purposes will be exposed to the bad effects of incinerators,” said Soleh in a written statement on Friday, August 6.
According to him, the waste disposal system using incineration technology contradicts the Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 04 of 2019. The facility project plans also neglected the social aspects. Such thermal technology, he added, had been long abandoned.
“We see this as a short-term thinking of the Environmental Agency, the South Jakarta administration, and Sarana Jaya in waste management,” Soleh opined.
Walhi thus asked Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to nix the project in Tebet Park as it also contradicted the latter’s commitment to creating an eco garden park in the area. Local governments should instead strengthen community-based 3R (Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle) waste management.
