TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airlangga University’s Social and Political Science Faculty is home to a unique museum dubbed the Ethnographic Museum and Center for the Study of Death located in East Java.

The museum, also known as the Death Museum, was established on September 25, 2005, coinciding with the dies natalis of the faculty’s Anthropology major .

The museum boasts large collections of human and fauna prehistoric relics, recent human remains, stone tools, Nusantara tomb replicas and classical Indonesian collections.

“The Indonesian culture on death has its own amazing uniqueness and diversity. This hasn’t been deeply studied,” said museum curator Toetik Koesbadiarti, citing Unair News on July 13.

Death, she said, is a life cycle so close to humans and various cultures and life aspects that were its background, ranging from economic, social, or cultural aspects.

In 2018, the museum, which is also used as an education, research, and recreation center, managed to win the Anugerah Purwakalagrha Indonesia Museum Awards as one of Indonesia’s most unique museums.
