TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of horses were flown from various nations to Japan for the Tokyo Olympics. The transportation process is not easy.

Hundreds of horses, each weighing 510 to 630 kilograms, were transported by planes in special stables—each carrying two horses. The stables' temperature is set at 16 degrees Celsius.

This is the first time for Tokyo's Haneda Airport to handle shipments of horses, each of great value. "These are not just horses, they are Olympic horses," said Tokyo International Airport administrator Takahashi Koji.

This year's first Olympic flight was from Europe, carrying 36 horses from Belgium via Dubai to Tokyo on an 18-hour journey. The same plane also carried 12,000 kilograms of feed and 13,500 kilograms of horse equipment.

All horses undergo a 60-day health surveillance period and a seven-day quarantine prior to the flights.

The equestrian competition at the Tokyo Olympics will take place from July 24 to August 7, 2021, where athletes will compete for six medals.
