TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said that the government never expected that there would be another surge of Covid-19 infections after June. Now, he said, Indonesia has to deal with the extremely high infection rate.

"Honestly, we did not predict that there would be another spike after June this year. This is something that we had just discovered. We still don't know a lot about Covid-19," he said at a press conference, Thursday, July 1.

The government has also decided to implement an emergency state of community-level public activity restrictions (PPKM Darurat) in Java and Bali. The government will also roll-back social assistance programs, as instructed by President Joko Widodo, Luhut said.

Earlier today, President Widodo announced that an emergency state of community-level public activity restrictions or PPKM Darurat will be enforced in Java and Bali from July 3 to 20.

Jokowi asked the public to comply with regulations during the PPKM Darurat, for the sake of everyone's safety. The government will also, he said, mobilize all available resources to curb the spread of Covid-19.
