TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) on Wednesday issued a recommendation for the police institution after it received reports on 651 cases of police brutality.

The hundreds of cases were collected from May 2020 up to July 2021. The watchdog elaborated their recommendations, “Firstly, evaluate the discretion that a police has with transparency and accountability so that the use of discressins based on subjectivity alone can be quantified and limited by legal regulations,” said KontraS researcher Rivanlee Anandar on Wednesday, June 30.

The second is to evaluate the effectiveness and tighten the mechanism of supervision externally and internally, especially in the levels of police boroughs that have dominantly conducted moral, ethical, disciplinary, and legal violations.

Thirdly is to build an early detection system against the misuse of authority especially when handling a mass that is prone to spark riots. KontraS also encouraged police to improve its independence and neutrality upon enforcing the law, which leads to anulling legal discrimination and put forth humanistic approach.
