TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Religious Affairs Ministry announced on Thursday, June 3, 2021, that the 2021 hajj pilgrimage will be canceled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The news was announced by Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas in a press conference on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at the ministry's headquarters, and is regulated in the Religious Affairs Minister's Decree No.660/2021 on the Cancelation of Hajj.

"We decided to cancel the departure of hajj pilgrims and the 2021 hajj pilgrimage for Indonesian citizens that use Indonesia’s hajj quota or from other sources," said the Minister.

During a meeting with House of Representatives (DPR) members not long ago, Minister Yaqut said the Saudi Arabia government has not yet confirmed the quota for hajj pilgrims, while the Ministry's Hajj crisis mitigation team simulation states that the preparation period for hajj has passed its deadline.

The Religious Affairs Minister crisis mitigation team was established by Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas in December 2020, which had prepared six scenarios for the 2021 hajj that also include the maximum quota allowed from the highest at 100 percent to its lowest at 5 percent.
