Anies Baswedan Pledges to Build More Bicycle Lanes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In commemoration of World Bicycle Day, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan pledged to provide more facilities for bicycle activities, including safe bike lanes. To date, the capital city has designated bike lanes with a total length of 63 kilometers.
The city administration planned to make the bike lane network reaching 578.8 kilometers throughout the capital. “Jakarta government supports the formation of more bicycle lanes, some of them are permanent lanes and some are on sidewalks like ones on Jalan Sudirman,” said Anies at the Senayan Roundabout, Thursday, June 3.
With the addition of bicycle lanes and supporting facilities for cyclists, the government hoped that the cycling habit of Jakartans could be developed. Thus, bicycles would not only be seen as a tool for exercise but also as mass transportation.
“Residents of this city will be healthier if they walk more and want to ride bicycles,” said Anies. The regional government is providing the facilities, while the community has begun to revive the habit of cycling.
Anies Baswedan during World Bicycle Day which falls today, June 3, also called on the people of Jakarta to ride a bike as transportation to work or other activities. He also appealed to cyclists to keep complying with the predetermined health protocol against Covid-19.
