TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan celebrates World Bicycle Day which falls today, June 3, by cycling together with various bike communities from the Senayan Roundabout to the Jakarta City Hall. Joining the group are the Danish Ambassador Lars Bo Larsen and the Dutch Ambassador Lambert Grijn.
Anies hoped that this momentum can help people realize that bicycles can be used as a means of transportation. “It's not just sports equipment,” said the governor who was met before cycling at the roundabout today.
The two ambassadors participated in this activity as a form of appreciation for the capital city which facilitates bicycles as a means of transport. Denmark and the Netherlands are renowned as countries with good cycling culture.
People can wear casual clothes or even work clothes while cycling, Anies added. “As I'm wearing batik today, because the uniform for Jakarta government officials on Thursday is batik.”
Anies Baswedan also argued that people do not need to wear special clothes or shoes for cycling. The travel distance also does not need to be far. “You can start by taking the route to go to work,” said the governor, giving messages for Jakarta residents on World Bicycle Day.
