TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia (UI) has been acknowledged by SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) as the country’s top university in 2021 based on a number of aspects. UI ranks 189 in Asia and 452 in the world.

Last year, the University of Indonesia was prominent in indicators of research and societal impacts. UI also ranks first in five subject areas in Indonesia in the SIR 2021 in catdgories of business, management, and accounting; dentistry; medicine; pharmacology, toxicology and pharmaceutics; and psychology.

The SCImago Journal Rank indicator is a measure of the scientific influence of scholarly journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where the citations come from. It is a research group that consists of Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Universitas Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid), serta Alcalá de Henares.

The Indicators are divided into three groups intended to reflect scientific, economic and social characteristics of institutions. Three indicators in measuring ranks for the SIR include research (50 percent), innovation (30 percent), and societal impact (20 percent).

Aspects in determining the category of research are indicated by the institution’s number of journals, international collaboration, open access, and scientific talent pool. The innovation category is indicated by the scientific publication output from an institution cited in patents while social impacts are indicated by a number of documents that have more than one mention in PlumX Metrics and mentions in Twitter, Facebook, blogs, news and comments (Reddit, Slideshare, Vimeo or YouTube), it also considers the number of backlinks and web sizes.

In response to this, University of Indonesia rector professor Ari Kuncoro stated his appreciation in the university’s website . He acknowledged that this was achieved due to collaborations with stakeholders. The rector hoped the university will be able to continue producing quality researches that are not only acknowledged by international publication but have relevance to a plethora of issues among society.
