TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Jaya Police ticketed 115 illegal travel vehicles attempting to transport passengers out of the capital throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, April 27-28, 2021. The regional police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said the vehicles used by the illegal travel agents were not passenger vehicles.

“We will take a firm action based on Article 308 of Traffic Law,” said Yusri in the police headquarters on Thursday, April 29.

The drivers could not present a license for carrying passengers. They were said to take passengers from Jakarta to West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Lampung.

Hundreds of vehicles were detained in the police headquarters. According to Yusri, this was aimed at giving a deterrent effect on illegal travelers. “The vehicles will be released after the Ketupat Operation ends,” he added.

Yusri explained that the police started to ticket illegal travel agents based on Article 308 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on traffic albeit the ban on mudik or Eid homecoming will take effect next week on May 6, 2021.

“The vehicles are detained because they operate outside of their route and carry homecoming travelers,” said Yusri, adding that the police will not hesitate to take action against illegal travel, particularly during the Eid homecoming ban.

People related to illegal travel may face imprisonment for a maximum of two months or a fine up to Rp500,000.
