TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President/COO of Hyundai Motor Asia Pacific Headquarter, Lee Kang Hyun, in an online discussion on Thursday announced that the South Korean automotive manufacturer will start the production of electric vehicles in its Indonesian factory in March 2022.

“Next year in March, [Hyundai] will start to produce electric vehicles from its Indonesian factory,” said Lee Kang Hyun on March 25.

Hyundai has spent US$1.55 billion to build a factory at the GIIC Deltamas area in Cikarang, West Java. However, Lee noted that this factory will not only exclusively produce electric cars but also traditional internal combustion engines (ICE).

“Hyundai actually built this factory for ICE production but it can also be used in parallel to manufacture electric vehicles,” said the VP.

Lee noted that this is aimed to increase the flexibility of the factory as future demands for EVs might grow. Hyundai has sold 200-300 electric vehicles in 2020, with prices ranging from Rp600-Rp700 million.
