TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin said the government would issue a policy related to this year’s Eid al-Fitr holidays and Eid homecoming or locally known mudik lebaran before the holy month of Ramadan.

“We have yet to decide about the homecoming. I think it will be issued not long before the fasting month,” said Ma'ruf after inspecting the Covid-19 vaccination at the Lampung Governor's Office on Monday, March 22.

The government is considering a number of impacts, both from the economic and health sectors on whether or not homecoming is allowed amid the pandemic. “In principle, we are considering the impacts if it is allowed or if it is prohibited, and also the impact on the increase in virus transmission,” he explained.

The government will strictly ban the public from going on the homecoming trip if it increases the virus transmission and the number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia.

“If the impact on virus transmission is high, then there will definitely be a ban. If it can be minimized, there will surely be other ways. Going on the homecoming trip is a tradition of our society, but we may face dangers if we allow it,” Ma'ruf Amin underlined.

Previous reports suggested that Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his side did not prohibit the 2021 Eid homecoming as long as it is carried out under terms of conditions that prevent the Covid-19 spread.
