TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta has the potential to experience flooding and landslides in the next two days as moderate to heavy intensity of rain will likely hit the capital on February 23-24, reported the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“So we still need to increase awareness of the potential for heavy rain which can likely trigger floods and landslides in the Jakarta area on Tuesday and Wednesday (February 23-24),” said the BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati as quoted from the website on Sunday, February 21.

The agency previously issued an early flood warning on February 18-19, which stated that the Jakarta and surrounding regions, namely Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi or Jabodetabek, were predicted to experience heavy to extreme rainfall reaching 100-150 millimeters.

From the data compiled by BMKG, the highest rainfall was recorded in Pasar Minggu reaching 226 mm per day, followed by Sunter Hulu (197 mm per day), Lebak Bulus (154 mm per day), and Halim (176 mm per day).

“In general, the rain occurs at night until dawn and continues until morning. These are critical times and need to be watched out for,” Dwikorita underlined.

However, according to BMKG, this year’s rainfall in the capital thus far was still lower than the rainfall in January 2020 which also caused severe Jakarta floods and also in its neighboring regions.
