Jakarta Submerged; Anies Baswedan Visits Manggarai Floodgate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Saturday, Feb. 20, visited the Manggarai sluice in Central Jakarta as the floods hit the city.

Anies and his staff monitored the water level in the location this morning.

“He [Anies Baswedan] ordered the officials to stand by and swiftly handle the trashes,” wrote the Jakarta Water Body Management Unit on its Instagram post @upkbadanairdlhdki, adding that the water level at Manggarai water gate was at 865 cm and in alert level 2 (Siaga 2).

A number of areas in the capital city is flooded due to the heavy rain pouring over the city since Friday night to Saturday morning, Feb. 19-20.

According to the city information app Jaki (Jakarta Kini), as per 08:51 this morning, 71 neighborhoods spread in South, East, and West Jakarta were submerged. The water level varies from 30 cm to more than 150 cm.

Several toll roads are also affected by the flood. Toll road operator Hutama Karya was forced close a number of toll gates, namely Kampung Rambutan, Gedong 2, Lenteng Agung 2, Ciputat 1, Pondok Pinang, Fatmawati 1, Ampera 1 until 12:00 local time today.

Hutama Karya also deployed its team to evacuate vehicles stuck in the flooded toll. Meanwhile, state toll road operator Jasa Marga, in its written statement, said that it was following up several inundation points in the toll roads under its management.
