Walhi Reacts to Anies Baswedan's Plan on Climate-Resilient City

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) has made suggestions in response to Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan’s plan to turn the capital into a Climate-Resilient City by 2030.

Walhi Jakarta Executive Director Tubagus Soleh Ahmadi highlighted environmental restoration in the Thousand Islands Regency. He opined that the islands also needed special attention.

“The government still has a bias,” Tubagus told Tempo on Monday, February 15.

Earlier reports said Anies targeted Jakarta to be a city resilient to climate change by 2030, both in terms of disaster mitigation and readiness to overcome the impacts of climate change.

Tubagus reminded the Thousand Islands was part of the administrative area of Jakarta. The ecosystems on the islands were highly sensitive to the impacts of climate change, he added.

However, the regency is managed through the tourism industry approach. Thus, he argued that the city government should adopt community-based management.

“Because we recorded that the management of Thousand Islands, which is based on industry, has worsened environmental damages,” Tubagus remarked.

Therefore, to transform Jakarta as a climate-resilient city, Walhi suggested Anies Baswedan strengthen community capacity and environmental recovery, for example, by building more green open spaces (RTH), restoring Jakarta Bay and reducing waste. The Jakarta government must also focus on efforts to reduce vehicle emissions, Tubagus said.
