TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The reaction and disaster analysis team at the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) predicts a potential for extreme rain in Jakarta, which extends to surrounding areas. LAPAN says that Jakarta will see heavy rains between today and tomorrow, February 18 and 19.

A similar early warning was also issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency or BMKG.

"Everyone is expected to raise their awareness for a potentially massive flood that may happen on February 19 or 20 in the Greater Jakarta Area," Erma Yulihastin from LAPAN's Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology said on Thursday.

In a written statement, Erma said that the prediction came after analyzing data from the LAPAN's SADEWA, a.k.a. the Satellite-based Disaster Early Warning System.

"Extreme rain will begin to occur in the Jakarta area from 23:00 on Thursday, February 18, 2021," she said. The rain intensity is expected to escalate, covering areas in Bekasi, Depok, Tangerang, and Karawang.
