TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police arrested a married couple, ST and ER, for running an illegal abortion clinic in Pedurenan, Mustikajaya, Bekasi. The person who performed the abortion on pregnant women is not a doctor, but someone who had worked in an abortion clinic as a janitor.

During the bust, the police also arrested a woman who was there to get an abortion.

Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said that ER—the wife—was the one who performed the abortion. Her husband, ST, went around marketing his wife's services.

"ER does not have the competence as a health worker, let alone a doctor. Her only experience working in an abortion clinic was for cleaning, for about four years," Yusri said in a press conference, Wednesday, January 10.

According to Yusri, ER was only willing to remove fetuses if the pregnancy is less than eight weeks. To the police, she claimed to have performed four abortions at her home. "But we are still investigating whether that is true or not," he said.
