Ahead of Imlek, Anies Baswedan Calls on People to Stay Home

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahead of Chinese New Year celebrations, which are locally referred to as Imlek, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan reminded residents of the capital city to avert traveling out of town or going on vacations as the city administration was still battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2572 Chinese New Year this year will fall on Friday, January 12, 2021. Anies said COVID-19 positive cases would normally climb one to two weeks after a long weekend.
“The number of cases has always surged at the end of a long weekend holiday,” wrote Anies Baswedan in a written statement on February 8, 2021. “We will be welcoming the Imlek and it will be a long weekend, too. I urge all of us to not travel or gather in crowded areas.”
He maintained that postponing vacations will be very crucial to prevent the spread of COVID-19 from going rampant. He also reminded Jakartans to obey the pandemic health protocols.
“Remember, our fight in Jakarta and outside of the capital city has not ended,” Anies Baswedan wrote.
