TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an extreme weather advisory after it had forecasted that January and February this year would see the peak rainfall season. However, they believe that this weather condition will possibly extend up until March.
Some of the many aspects that have helped strengthen rain intensity according to the agency are the Asian monsoon and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) that has shown anomalies.
The effects of La Nina are also expected to affect Indonesia’s weather as it is only predicted to return to normal in May this year. The oscillation over the Indian Ocean in the Eastern part of Africa - which is traveling to the Pacific Ocean - will pass Indonesian regions and contribute to the higher rain intensity.
Rainfall is forecasted to fall over Jakarta, Surabaya, Mataram-Lombok, Makassar, Jayapura, Biak, Lhokseumawe, and Medan.
