TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) rescued three orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in East Kotawaringin Regency on Sunday, January 31. One of the orangutans was found with wounds, suspected to be caused by sharp objects.

Muriansyah, the on-duty commander of BKSDA Central Kalimantan's Sampit Post, said that they made two rescues. Two orangutans, one female and its young cub were rescued in a rubber plantation at General Sudirman Road.

Another one, a male orangutan about 25 years old, was found in a rice field with a head wound that required nine stitches. The wound was allegedly caused by a sharp weapon. Officers have asked residents for information to investigate the possibility of abuse by residents.

Muriansyah said that the rescue processes were assisted by the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI).

That had been reports of sightings of the tree orangutans since a week ago. The mother and its cub were spotted in villagers' rubber plantation while the male was seen in Lampuyang Village, Teluk Sampit District.

"The three orangutans have been taken to Pangkalan Bun for observations and preparations to be released into the wild," Muriansyah said.
