TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 shook parts of the country's provinces of South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan at 09:22 Tuesday morning, February 13. The earthquake was located on land 19 kilometers away northeast of Banjar, South Kalimantan, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
"There is no threat of a tsunami," Rasmid, head of the geophysics station at BMKG Balikpapan, said in a written statement, Tuesday.
Rasmid said that based on the estimated shakemap the earthquake rocked South Kalimantan's Banjarmasin City, Tapin Regency, and Barito Kuala Regency with a scale of III MMI. This means that people inside houses can clearly feel the tremors.
For parts of Central Kalimantan, namely Sampit City, Pulang Pisau Regency, and Palangkaraya City, the scale was II-III MMI, which feels like people inside houses felt some shaking as if a truck was passing by.
Judging from its type and mechanism, Rasmid said, the earthquake was a shallow one caused by activities on the Meratus fault.
Rasmid said that so far there have been no reports of damages caused by the earthquake.
