TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) has issued a statement on the news suggesting that several Indonesian markets have been trading using currencies other than Rupiah.

“In this case, we assert that Dinar, Dirham, or any national currencies other than Rupiah is not a legitimate payment system to be used within the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI),” said executive director of Bank Indonesia’s communication department in a press statement on January 28.

Prior to Bank Indonesia’s statement, the use of currencies other than Rupiah, which specifically used dirham at 'muamalah markets' located in Bekasi, Depok, Bogor, up to Yogyakarta and gained popularity in social media.

Based on a Youtube video regarding this issue, traders and customers used non-rupiah currencies, such as gold dinar and silver dirham coins, to purchase items in the market.

Bank Indonesia calls for people to maintain Indonesia’s sovereignty and the use of the rupiah as the only currency used in the country.
