TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company Unilever predicted that the consumer goods business would fully recover in the second semester of this year.

“I see that the trend in the first semester has slightly improved,” said Unilever President Director Ira Noviarti on Wednesday, January 27. According to her, the improvement was in line with the rise in the people's purchasing power.

Ira believed that the people’s purchasing power in the first half of 2021 could be better than last year. However, the growth of the FMCG industry was still at a moderate pace. Public consumption, she added, would depend on the success of the government’s Covid-19 vaccination programs.

On that basis, Unilever was determined to support the vaccination by relying on the firm’s cold chain distribution network. Thus, the government could easily control the vaccine storages that would be distributed to over 20,000 community health centers or Puskesmas throughout the country.

“I see the recovery [of FMCG business] in the second semester [of 2021]. But these are all predictions. All we can do as a market leader is to drive public consumption even faster,” Ira remarked.
