Anies Baswedan Criticized for Relaxing Sanctions for Health Protocol Violators

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) chairman of the commission overseeing government affairs, Mujiyono, lamented Governor Anies Baswedan's decision to remove progressive fines for the Covid-19 health protocols violators.
“In this condition, sanctions must be stricter, not relaxed,” said Mujiyono on Thursday, Jan. 21.
He opined that Anies should have noted the progressive sanctions in Gubernatorial Regulation (Pergub) No. 3/2021, a derivative of the Regional Regulation (Perda) No. 2/2020 on the Covid-19 mitigation.
“It is right that Pergub refers to Perda. But Pergub contains the technical implementation. So the progressive sanction can still be included [in Pergub].”
Amid the worsening pandemic, he argued, what the government must do is tightening the supervision and punishment. If violators were given a light penalty, the violation would repeat.
“As for business entities, perhaps it is compensation for the business sector. I do not agree that the sanctions are lessened in this current condition,” Mujiyono underlined.
The Jakarta government decided to scrap progressive fines for individuals and business entities violating health protocols in the new gubernatorial regulation or Pergub No. 3 of 2021.
