TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Beef traders in the capital city of Jakarta and its satellite cities; Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, announced a mass-strike following the recent rise in beef prices. The strike is said to start from today on January 20 up to January 22.

Traders joining the strike are members of the Indonesian Beef Traders Association (APDI) after holding a meeting with stakeholders and policy makers discussing beef prices in the market.

Chairperson of the Indonesian Traditional Market Traders Association (IKAPPI) Abdullah Mansuri said that the PDI circular letter on the strike has reached him and said the Trade Ministry has been informed about it.

Moreover, Abdullah said the rise in beef prices that has happened is a routine cycle that happens after Christmas and New Year. He argues that people’s buying power had not recovered yet due to the pandemic and the fluctuation in the value of beef is felt harder by traders.

“Upstream prices are already high and affect the ones in the downstream. Phenomenons such as this happened 4, 5 years ago,” said Abdullah on Tuesday, January 19.

Pure beef is currently sold at Rp122,000 per kilogram from the usual Rp114,000.
