TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Trade Ministry has hinted at the possibilities of welcoming beef imports from the United States. Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said the nation was open to beef imports from any country so long as they could meet Indonesia’s requirements.
Enggartiasto said the planned beef imports from the United States would be taken care of by a state-owned enterprise (BUMN).
“Anybody can [import beef]. Spain has. The United States is can do it as well now,” he said in Batu, East Java, Thursday night, October 3, 2019.
The minister, however, was non-committal when asked about the volume of the US beef imports. His ministry was also tight-lipped as to when the import would commence.
“I have no idea as to how many thousand tons,” he said.
He added his ministry was presently still awaiting the issuance of recommendation protocols from the Agriculture Ministry relative to beef imports from Brazil that would be handled by three state enterprises.
