TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi flies to West Sulawesi today, January 19. The president is inspecting the earthquake site and meet with residents.

"He will be visiting evacuation areas and houses damaged by the Majene quake," Bey Machmudin, the Presidential Secretariat's deputy for protocol, press and media, told reporters on Tuesday.

A powerful 6.2-magnitude quake struck West Sulawesi on Friday last week, leaving thousands homeless as houses and buildings turned into rubbles.

Among public buildings that are heavily damaged are the governor's office, Maleo Town Square, and Mitra Manakarra Hospital. The provincial government of West Sumatera has declared an emergency response status.

As per Monday, January 18, the earthquake's death toll had jumped to 84. Almost 1,000 people suffered injuries and 19,435 forced to stay in shelters.
