Flight SJ182 Black Box Casing Recovered, Memory Still Missing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) announced it had recovered the black box casing and batteries of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) belonging to Flight SJ182 that had crashed into the waters of the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) chain on Saturday, January 9.
Unfortunately, the CVR’s flash memory, which crucially keeps the voice recordings, remains missing.
“We have only recovered its casing and batteries,” said Navy spokesperson First Adm. Julius Widjojono to Tempo, January 15. “We have not recovered [the CVR memory].”
The search for the remaining components of the black box remains to be the focus of the joint search and rescue (SAR) operation today.
SAR mission coordinator (SMC) Brig. Gen. Rasman on January 15 said the number of divers have been increased from 260 to 310 to recover Flight SJ182’s crucial wreckages, salvageable parts from the flight’s passengers, and the complete CVR from Sriwijaya Air.
As of Thursday, January 13, the search and rescue team recovered human remains that were collected into 239 body bags, 40 bags filled with aircraft wreckages, and 33 large-sized aircraft parts.
