Tana Toraja Landslides; Two Victims Found, Death Toll Rises to 20

16 April 2024 09:46 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTwo victims of the landslides in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi who were previously declared missing were found by the search and rescue team on Monday, 15 April 2024.

Both victims were found dead in Manggau Village, Makale Subdistrict, and their bodies were immediately laid to rest at Lakipadada Hospital.

With the discovery of these two victims, the total death toll has reached 20 people, with 16 found in Manggau Village, Makale Subdistrict, and four other victims were previously found in Lembang Randan Baru Village, South Makale Subdistrict.

Head of BNPB's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre Abdul Muhari said in his statement that the search and rescue efforts were halted with the discovery of the two victims. However, the team remains on standby for possible reports of other lost residents.

He also explained that search and rescue efforts were slightly constrained by bad weather, with fog and medium to heavy downpours. The search process was also hampered by steep terrain, making it difficult for heavy equipment to reach the affected location.

According to him, BNPB (The National Disaster Management Agency) also sent aid to the affected locations, led by Deputy for Emergency Management Fajar Setyawan. In addition, Muhari said, BNPB also brought a number of logistical support and equipment; including refugee tents, family tents, basic necessities, ready-to-eat food, hygiene kits, blankets, mattresses, folding mattresses, cots, light towers, generators, alkon pumps, water purifiers, and chainsaws.

"There is also a Ready to Use Fund (DSP) worth Rp250 million for emergency operations and recovery, including the fulfillment of basic needs for affected residents," he said.
