Mount Merapi Spews Lava 4 Times in 6 Hours amid Rising Volcanic Activity

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) recorded a significant increase in the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta within six hours on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

Based on yesterday's observation carried out from 18:00-24:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), incandescent lava avalanches occurred four times on a small intensity, flowing down to Kali Krasak (Krasak River).

“The maximum distance of the lava avalanches was 400 meters, with two rumbling sounds on moderate intensity,” said the BPPTKG head Hanik Kumaida on Wednesday, January 6.

The incandescent lava avalanches were observed at 18:47 WIB, 19:11 WIB, 22:37 WIB, and 23:00 WIB.

Besides, 23 earthquakes occurred within the six-hour period with an amplitude of 3-41 mm for 11-127 seconds. The volcanic material avalanches reached a maximum of 500 meters to the southwest.

The lava avalanches observed from CCTV cameras were recorded at 18:47 and 19:11 WIB. The volcanic activity was heard at Babadan Post at 20:21 and 22:00 WIB, while in Kaliurang Post at 22:37 and 23:00 WIB.

Today, January 6, at 00:00 until 06:00 WIB, Mount Merapi had two times spewed lava on a small scale over a radius of 400 meters heading to Kali Krasak. The moderate scale of rumbling sound was heard twice from Babadan Post.
