Jakarta Imposes 'Crowd Free Night' ahead of New Year's Eve

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police traffic directorate announced that it will impose not just a 'car free night' but also a 'crowd free night' during the 2021 New Year’s Eve tonight. It is aimed to prevent crowds from gathering and contain the spread of Covid-19 in the capital city.

“The car-free night and crowd-free night will be imposed in two major streets, namely Sudirman-Thamrin and Jakarta’s East Flood Canal (BKT),” said police traffic director Senior Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yugo on December 30.

The two policies will effectively ban the presence of vehicles and people, including cyclists and pedestrians, in the aforementioned areas. The two locations are known to garner crowds annually during New Year’s Eve.

The authorities will also beef up their personnel standing guard in the two streets and also across popular sites that are normally used to celebrate the turning of the New Year. Major police patrols, consist of joint police and military personnel, will also be mobilized.
