M 5.0 Earthquake Strikes Bengkulu; BMKG Warns about Aftershocks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on early Thursday morning reported that Bengkulu province in the southwest coast of Sumatra had been struck by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake.

The quake that shook the region at 05:19 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) was epicentered 146 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu city and had its hypocenter at the depth of 10 kilometers at sea.

BMKG has clarified that the earthquake has not triggered the early tsunami warning but warns that there are possible aftershocks that could strike again.

The last earthquake striking this region according to the BMKG was the magnitude 5.1 earthquake on November 29, 2020.
