TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy coordinator of Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) Feri Kusuma on Tuesday worries that the alleged clash between police and members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) on Monday will potentially spark a bigger conflict and strongly urges the government to take notice of this issue.

“If it is not solved properly it can potentially be a major issue [in the future],” said Feri on December 8.

Since the incident was announced by the police on Monday, there remains to be two sides of the story that comes from both police and FPI representatives. Police claim the six FPI members had to be shot as an act of self defense but the mass-organization denies police’s version of the story and maintains that FPI members do not carry firearms.

Feri believes this case must be handled by conducting a transparent investigation against what KontraS believes might possibly be an act of extrajudicial killings. He also highly suggests police to provide its utmost cooperation in solving it.

He reminds police to remain within the legal corridors of law enforcement and ensure that field personnel abides by the correct procedures. “This must be a momentum for a reform in the security sector,” said the KontraS deputy.
