TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Miftachul Akhyar on Wednesday urged police to reveal the facts and be truly transparent related to the alleged clash between police personnel and Islam Defenders Front (FPI) members at the Jagorawi toll road on Monday.

“[We] call for everyone to put forth consistent and consequent legal proceedings,” wrote the MUI chairman on December 9.

He also encouraged both parties involved to solve an issue up to its roots and conduct good communication with each other to prevent a similar tragedy from happening again in the future.

Miftachul expressed his deepest condolences for the relatives of the victims and strongly encouraged people to keep their composure, seek tabayyun (clarification),and avoid aggravating an already heated situation.

Six members of the FPI, according to the Metro Jaya Police, were fatally shot after police claim they had attacked police personnel while escorting the organization’s leader Rizieq Shihab. Police say they were there on a stake out for an ongoing investigation involving Rizieq.
