TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) Commission IV Deputy, Dedy Mulyadi, on Monday urges the government to highly preserve the natural ecosystem of the Komodo National Park in the region’s construction into a ‘super-priority’ destination.

“We will advise the government to have the area’s tourism remain nature-based. DPR suggests against changes into a form of zoo, moreover a safari park,” said Dedi to Tempo at the Senayan Parliamentary complex on November 23.

According to the government’s project blueprint, the Komodo Island which is part of the national park, will be polished as a limited super-premium tourist destination and will charge tourists with a whopping US$1,000 for each entry as a member.

Meanwhile, the national park’s Rinca Island - which is also one of many komodo habitats - is slated to be the regular massive tourism spot which will have man made facilities built over it. This construction project is met with rejection from locals as it is believed to be exploiting one of Indonesia’s ‘green areas.’

Dedi Mulyadi said members of the House will summon a government representative for a hearing regarding the constructions taking place in the Komodo National Park. He said the DPR will also suggest tax system changes that will benefit locals rather than the central government.
