TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police chief Insp. Gen. Nana Sudjana will officially lose his title tomorrow, November 19. Insp. Ge. Mohammad Fadil Imran, previously the head of the East Java Police, will take over his position.

"The handover ceremony is tomorrow," Jakarta Police PR chief Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said here on Thursday, November 19.

On Monday, the National Police Headquarters removed Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Nana Sudjana from his position for failing to enforce coronavirus health protocols with regards to the mass gatherings in Jakarta held by the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) last week.

On the same day, Insp. Gen M. Fadil Imran was appointed as his successor, and Nana will become his special staff coordinator.

The demotion was set forth in National Police chief telegram 3222/XI/Kep./2020, signed by on Monday. Apart from Nana, a number of police chiefs in Jakarta were also replaced.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen Argo Yuwono confirmed that Nana was demoted for allowing thousands of people to gather in Petamburan—a breach of Covid-19 health protocols—during the celebration of Prophet Muhammad's birthday and the wedding reception of FPI leader Rizieq Shihab's daughter on Saturday.

The Jakarta Provincial Government also sent a Satpol PP letter to Shihab and FPI, the organizing committee of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebration, notifying that they are sentenced to pay a fine of Rp50 million.

The mass gatherings have also implicated government officials, including Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan. The police are questioning Anies over allegations of violating the Quarantine Law.
