TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police Head of Public Relations Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said his side has revealed a bicycle robbery syndicate that has been in action dozens of times in Jakarta Greater Area or Jabodetabek. The police also confiscated 34 bikes of various types and brands.

However, the police only received several reports of lost bikes.

“We received only four reports by four victims from the end of October to November (to date) mostly from Tangerang, Banten, and North Jakarta,” said Yusri on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.

According to Yusri, victims were reluctant to file a police report, while reports are necessary for the law enforcers to develop the case and arrest perpetrators. “We are still investigating this. We are encouraging victims to report,” he added.

Previously, the police arrested seven bike thieves in the Jabodetabek area. Three of the robbers ran a bike repair shop. Based on the preliminary investigation, the suspects admitted to having sold most of the stolen bikes and only 34 remained.

The police were still hunting down two other suspects. Four of the bicycle thieves were charged with Article 363 of the Criminal Code with a maximum of 7 years in jail, while the three others were charged under Article 40 of the Criminal Code with a maximum of 6 years imprisonment.
