TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Jakarta Police foiled a smuggling attempt of 159-kilogram marijuana from Aceh. The illegal drugs which were packed in wooden boxes were delivered to Jakarta using a courier service.

The parcels were sent as if they were from state-owned electricity firm PLN and telecommunication giant Telkomsel.

“The package is wrapped in a wooden box as if it is a package from PLN and Telkomsel,” said East Jakarta Police Chief Comr. Arie Ardian on Friday, November 6, 2020.

Four people are named suspects in the arrest. They are identified as RS (26), MR (25), MI (20), and MF (26). Arie said that they were from two different syndicates.

“We arrest them in two different places,” said Arie, adding that RS, MR, and MI were apprehended in Kalideres, West Jakarta, while MF was arrested in Cipayung, East Jakarta.

Arie explained that the police initially received information about suspicious packages from Aceh at a courier service office in East Jakarta.

Based on the preliminary examination, the suspects run the illegal drugs business for two months. The suspects have been charged with Article 114 (2) subsidiary to Article 111 in conjunction with Article 132 of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics and could face a maximum punishment of the death penalty.
