Governor Issues Warning as Mount Merapi Status Increases to Alert Level III

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the growing activity shown by Mount Merapi to the level 3 alert status, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo called for the local disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) to stand guard on any possibilities in the near future.
He also urged them to be quick on their feet to help warn people living in Merapi’s vicinity. The volcano is located at the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta.
“Mobilize the traditional warning systems if the Early Warning System (EWS) is not there,” said Ganjar Pranowo on Thursday, November 5.
The governor announced that he had mobilized BPBD teams to the areas in Mount Merapi’s vicinity that will likely be hit hard by the volcano eruption. The regions include Klaten, Magelang, and Boyolali. However, he said Klaten remains to be projected as the hardest hit region if Merapi does erupt.
The governor called for people in Merapi’s location to remain calm but always stand guard. “Prepare the transports needed and valuable possessions that can be evacuated if an eruption does indeed happen,” Ganjar Pranowo wrote.
