TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that 29.12 million people or 14.28 percent of the working-age population are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It (the figure) consists of 2.56 million unemployed people and 760,000 non-workers (Bukan Angkatan Kerja/BAK),” said the agency head Suhariyanto on Thursday, November 5, 2020.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have no job because of the pandemic amounted to 1.77 million, and those whose working hours cut following the pandemic reached 24.03 million people.

In terms of gender, the male productive-age population affected by Covid-19 was 18.03 million, higher than the female number at 11.09 million.

When compared based on the regions, the working-age population in urban areas affected by the pandemic hit 20.28 million, while in rural areas it was 8.84 million.

To contain the virus transmission, the government was restricting people’s mobility both on a national and regional scale. This surely brought impacts on the lowering number of commuter workers if compared to normal conditions.

In August 2020, the BPS noted that the number of commuter workers in Indonesia was 7.01 million people, a decrease of 21.07 percent than in August 2019 of 8.89 million people.
