TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of people planned to take to the street again today, October 22, protesting the Omnibus Law on Job Creation in front of the State Palace, Central Jakarta.

The mass would come from the Banten United Labor’s Union (AB3), Jakarta’s Labor’s People Movement (Gebrak), and the National Association of University Students' Executive Bodies (BEM SI).

“Thousands of AB3 workers will move to the State Palace at 10 a.m. using motorcycles via Jalan Daan Mogot,” said the AB3 coordinator Maman Nuriman in a written statement on Thursday, October 22, 2020.

Other than AB3, Gebrak spokesperson Nining Elitos announced her side would also stage a demonstration at the palace at 10 a.m. after conducting a long march from the International Labor Organizations (ILO).

“Other Gebrak elements will continue to carry out actions in industrial areas, too,” Nining added.

The Jabodetabek-Banten Regional Coordinator of BEM SI, Bagas Maropindra, said students would stage yet another rally today. Students, he added, were disappointed that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi did not want to meet them yet.

At the previous rally against the Omnibus Law, Jokowi only sent Presidential Special Staff Aminuddin Ma'ruf to meet students. “This is a peaceful rally and free from all anarchist actions as a manifestation of the intellectual and moral movement of Indonesian students,” Bagas underlined in a release after the demonstration on Friday, October 16, 2020.

Jakarta Traffic Police Director Comr. Sambodo Purnomo Yogo said his side had prepared traffic reroute as anticipatory measures. The police had also installed roadblocks to block the mass from reaching the State Palace last night. People were asked to avoid the palace areas and Jalan M.H. Thamrin, he added.
