TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The personal data protection draft bill (RUU) is designed to oversee the rights of a country’s citizen on personal data ownership, which according to Communication and Informatics Minister (Menkominfo) Johnny G. Plate has become more urgent as headlines have lately been filled with news of cyber hacking and other types of cyberattacks.

“All of which will only strengthen the need to have personal data protected. The government and the house of representatives (DPR) are hoped to agree on and accelerate the completion of the personal data protection act,” said Minister Johnny G. Plate in a hearing with members of the House on Tuesday.

The draft bill is categorized into two types: public personal data and specific personal data. The former includes a person’s name, gender, citizenship, religion, and/or personal data that are combined to identify a person. Meanwhile, specific personal data include health information, biometric data, genetic data, sexual orientation, political view, criminal record, children’s data, personal finances, and other specifics overseen by the constitution.

The personal data protection draft bill (RUU) according to the draft bill’s committee member, Ahmad Rizki Sadig, explains that the rights of personal data holders that people must be aware of is the right to obtain information (Article 4), the right of access (Article 6), the right to fix (Article 7), and the right to erase data and/or redact data processing approval (Article 8 and 9).
