TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi on Friday agrees with the suggestion first pitched by the Education and Cultural Affairs Minister, Nadiem Makarim, on the gradual reopening of Islamic boarding schools or madrasah.

“The religious affairs ministry agrees with the idea,” said Fachrul in Friday’s virtual seminar on policies on schooling amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fachrul Razi said the ministry would assure that each and every Islamic boarding school would have enough room to accommodate students and had obtained the approval of students’ parents.

However, he maintained that remote learning would remain in areas that are unable to conduct physical school attendance.

“Most will mix the two. There will be remote learning and physical attendances,” said Fachrul Razi, who initially said at the beginning of the pandemic that Islamic boarding schools would remain open regardless of the area’s status on COVID-19 spread.

He said as of now there had been three Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) across the country that had become viral clusters, and that the percentage was deemed insignificant.
