TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan was studying programs to recover the tourism sector in Indonesia. One of them is by encouraging foreign workers to stay in Bali to work on the island.

“Foreigners who are working in the technology field can perhaps work from Bali. We are thinking about it and supporting it. We are still drafting the regulations,” said Luhut in a video conference on Thursday, August 13.

He also hoped that regional hospitals could cooperate with well-known hospitals in order to attract potential domestic patients who previously used to seek treatment overseas. Thus, the domestic spending could also increase amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luhut argued that the recovery of the tourism sector due to the pandemic would take a long time, which he estimated for up to ten months at the earliest.

The government had so far reopened tourism in Bali and Banyuwangi. "We are grateful that after two weeks, the number of COVID-19 cases in Bali dropped," Luhut Pandjaitan added.

As published on the country's official site for COVID-19, covid.go.id, on Wednesday, August 12, Bali has 3,892 positive cases. 455 patients were being treated or under self-isolation, 3,388 patients have recovered, and 49 died.
